Dimitri from Paris

DFP.jpg
Dimitri, who is renowned for his chic disco and house sets, first visited the Playboy Mansion in 2000, to launch his seminal mix CD, A Night at the Playboy Mansion. Hugh Hefner offered up the iconic Playboy Mansion to mark the album’s release and Dimitri’s guests included Daft Punk and Kylie Minogue.

Dimitri’s style, a beguiling mix of retro flourishes and carefully selected modern classics, has remained with him through out his adult life, and reflects his deeply-held respect for the disco era.

While fellow DJs have altered their styles to stay abreast of newer trends, Dimitri prefers to stay true to his roots. His CDs remain popular too.

The first Playboy mix has sold just under 400,000 copies, and morphed into a series, the latest inclusion being Dimitri From Paris Return To The Playboy Mansion. The first disc in this new mix pairs break-in-case-of-emergency floor fillers like Jamiroquai ‘Cosmic Girl’ alongside obscure eighties tunes like Musique’s ‘Love Massage’ and recent jazz-pop oddities like Mario Biondi’s ‘This Is What You Are’.

“It is good to remember that I have been in the business over 25 years, we have this saying in France,” he explains, “‘in the old pots you make the better soup’. I do an old fashioned, heart-warming soup. It goes down well; I like it and I want other people to taste it.”

Kaskade will be promoting “Bring the Night”, his second CD release on Ultra Records, with the ultimate DJ trifecta on New Years Eve that include performances starting on December 31, 2007 – Los Angeles, CA at Giant Maximus, set time 10pm-12am, then he moves on January 1, 2008 – Las Vegas, NV at the Empire Ball Room, set time 7am - 10am, with a final set on January 1, 2008 – San Francisco, CA Mission Rock Cafe set time 2:30am - 4:30am.

With “Bring the Night”, San Francisco House DJ Kaskade sets things off with the opener, Axwell’s “I Found U,” and his own remixes—of Nelly Furtado’s lilting “All Good Things (Come to an End)” and Floetry’s “SupaStar” (mixed in key with Milton Jackson’s ecstatic “Cycles”) are blowing up the dancefloors around the world.

We still can’t stop listening to Kaskade’s third album “Love Mysterious” (9/06) and first release with Ultra Records. “Love Mysterious” has us hooked with its bold production and big-room sound different from his preceding CDs, “It’s You, It’s Me” and “In The Moment.” With amazing tracks like Stars Align, Kaskade releases his trademark melodies, sensual vocalists, and emotionally driven sound but “Love Mysterious” takes things to a sound of greater dimension.

A|X EXCLUSIVE DJ INTERVIEW

scumfrog_jesse.jpg
SCUMFROG – JESSE HOUK
Amsterdam’s Jesse Houk, aka The Scumfrog, is always thinking ahead. The in-demand remixer and energetic DJ is looking for ways to take dance music to new arenas, weather it’s with his live electronic music act “DJs Are Alive” or at his virtual club, Glam Scum, on Second Life. The “music revolution-ary” is no stranger to traditional dance clubs though, recently headlining Ibiza’s Privilege (the worlds biggest club), playing at the Burning Man festival, and touring constantly. We sat down with the former boy band member to find out his loves, his hates, and what he has planned for his new website.

How did you first get into DJing?

I started DJing in high school in the mid eighties as a way to get invited to parties otherwise exclusive to girls and guys in higher grades. This was long before a DJ was cool. He was usually tucked away somewhere and yelled at for not playing enough Kid n Play. However, the next day in class you could say I was there.

What was your first big break?

Landing two of my tracks on Danny Tenaglias Global Underground compilation in 1999.

How would you describe your personal look/style?

I'm into fashion to the point that I follow certain brands and designers. If something makes me look good I stick with it. But I’m not very hip when it comes to keeping up with the seasons. You’ll be likely to see me in something that is so 2004. I’m not against labels as long as they’re not visible on me.

How would you describe your sound?

Fitting and elevating.

What do you think about the current state of affairs in dance music?

Between Clear Channel still not being down with Trentmoller, and actual music sales being at a seemingly unstoppable decline, dance music is completely underground again, which is, in my humble opinion, when it is at its most innovative and vibrant. More and more producers during their creative process let go of the notion that their songs need to sell or get radio play. This results in music that is more from the heart than from the mind, and on any given underground club night, the result of this trend is very audible.

What other artists or producers have been impressing you lately?

Keep an eye out for Deadmau5 (Canada), D-Nox (Germany), David Gausa (Spain), Lank (Hungary), Tommy Vee (Italy)

What’s your favorite club to play? Favorite city to play in?

The Deep End in Black Rock City

What’s the one thing you cant live without when on the road?

My amazing team back home that informs me where I am, and what I am doing, on an hour-to-hour basis.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen or had happen to you at a gig?

Watching a fellow DJ from the same line-up chatting up a girl while I was performing. He was claiming to be me after she told him she had come to the club to see The Scumfrog. I don’t know if she fell for it, but they did leave the club together.

What exciting stuff do you have coming up? Gigs, albums, travel...?

I did a project with Cyndi Lauper for her upcoming album. The stuff came out really cool and is about ready for release on Sony. For travel info check out www.thescumfrog.com.

With his new website thescrumfrog.com – Jesse is one of the first major producers to give away upcoming tracks to DJs and fans. Check it out and get tour dates, new releases, merchandise, and downloads, and some extra exclusives.

Listen to The Scumfrog’s new show on Sirius Radio’s Area 33 or his most recent DJ mix podcast at theflawlessSound.com. He’ll be playing at New York’s Sullivan Room on December 14, 2007.

A|X EXCLUSIVE - DJ INTERVIEW SERGE DEVANT

serge.jpg
Styletaxx got a chance to sit down wth one of today's HOTTEST DJ's on the electronic scene.

Styletraxx:
So how was your summer?

Serge Devant:
Summer was great, but super busy. July and August were probably the busiest months I have ever had. I think I played close to 25 gigs in that period. It was very tiring but also really exciting. I also got the chance to meet a lot of really cool people.

Styletraxx:
Any crazy stories?

Serge Devant:
The weirdest thing to happen to me recently was just before the summer started. I was flying from Trinidad to Venezuela, and I ended up being on the same flight as one of the terrorists who wanted to blow up gas tanks at JFK airport. As one of the only Americans on the plane, and being from New York, it was a little surreal. When you play internationally and travel as much as I do, stuff like that can really bug you out.

Styletraxx:
How did you get into DJing or music in general?

Serge Devant;
I’m originally from Russia, and went to school there to study music very young. When I moved to the States, a friend of mine had turntables. I had already been a fan of high energy dance music, so I played around on his decks, and was instantly hooked.

Styletraxx:
How would you describe your personal look or style?

Serge Devant:
I’d say I have a casual look, but artistic. When I’m buying clothes, I like unique things that not a lot of people have. My look is like my music, influenced by whatever I think is cool and interesting. But for a real “rock and roll” look, you can’t beat a great pair of shades.

Styletraxx:
How would you describe your sound?

Serge Devant:
I’d call it progressive and techy, with cool funky-chunky basslines and melodic elements mixed in. I’m not afraid to let the music get “emotional” here and there either. But the unifying element is that the energy of the room is always present in the music.

Stylerraxx:
What makes you unique from other DJs in the scene right now?

Serge Devant;
My versatility. I play a bit of everything, not sticking to any one style in my sets. I’d rather take the crowd to different places over the coarse of the night, and when they are really into it, I can really experiment. I like playing with the vibe of the room, and don’t mind changing up my style to fit the moment.

Styletraxx;
What other artists have been impressing you lately?

Serge Devant:
Dubfire has certainly been on fire lately. I really like what he’s been producing. And Deadmaus and Adam k has been putting out some really quality stuff, as well.

Styletraxx:
What was your first “big break”?

Serge Devant:
Things really took off for my when I got picked by Tiesto to open for him on the bunch of dates, and then he really vouched for me publicly in a couple of interviews.

Styletraxx:
Now you and Tiesto are pretty tight, with you continuing to open for him at gigs like in the Hamptons this past Labor Day weekend, or at the Borgata in Atlantic City in October. How did you two wind up working together?

Serge Devant:
After the first time I was lucky enough to open for him a few years ago, he was really impressed. Now he asks for me when ever he plays in the States.

Styletraxx:
What’s your favorite club to play? Favorite city to play in?
I really enjoy playing Vanguard in LA. It has a great sound system, and is all around just a great venue. I really used to love playing Crobar in New York – I was one of their youngest resident DJs.

Serge Devant:
I still love playing anywhere in New York City the most. It’s my home town, and I always get an amazing reception when I play here.

Styletraxx:
What do you think about the current state of nightlife and dance music in New York right now?

Serge Devant:
It’s a bit shaky, with some real hit or miss nights. A lot of the fun nights lately have been at cool, smaller places. Since Crobar closed, the only big club that is bringing talent is Pacha. But we really need something else here in the city.

Styletraxx:
What do you think we could do to improve it?

Serge Devant:
Someone needs to open a couple of new venues, or build new parties at old places. A big festival that would bring a bunch of new, upcoming talent would work, too.

Styletraxx:
What exciting stuff do you have coming up?

Serge Devant;
I just completed a new single called "Part of Me," which has some great remixes. That comes out at the end of the month. I also have some cool gigs coming up. I’m playing Pacha in Egypt, which should be amazing, and I’m heading back to play in Russia soon. I’m definitely excited to be going back “home.”

Serge Devant plays Sonar, the new Saturday party at Avalon New York on October 6rth, and opens for A|X favorite Tiesto at the Borgata October 26th. “Part of Me” is out this month on Ultra Records.
