Styletraxx: Tech Toys

'Ion'ic Point of View

twinvideo_web_med.jpg

The video camera has gone through a complex revolution since first introduced to triumph against the still picture. Now, pictures and videos inundate every site and blog from Youtube to Facebook. Videos are watched and watched and rewatched again and again. However your reaction to the first time you lived through that experience is never like any of the others. Nothing beats putting a face to that distant "OMG!" scream you hear in the background. So Styletraxx has come across a fun new toy popping up on the web that will turn the video world backwards - the Ion Twin Video player. Similar to the Flip Video Camera, it is a pocket cam meant to conveniently be with you at all times for all of life's moments. The Ion has a slight attribute that sets it above the rest. The device actually has TWO video capturing lenses - one on the front AND back. So not only can you record your view but you get to record your reaction at the same time! Brilliance!

Before you get (jump) into your car and drive (speed) to your nearest electronic store, we sadly must announce that is not available yet. It's set to arrive in US markets around the second quarter of this year, so it is soon. Until then, check out the details here.

Turn Your Laptop Into A Mini DJ Booth

vestax-spin-dj-controller-2.jpg

Apple Mac owners can now turn their prized possessions into a full-blown DJ system with full iTunes integration with the aid of the new Spin controller from Vestax and Algoriddim DJay software, an all-in-one package that gives DJs total control to mix, scratch and play music like a pro DJ.

The Spin controller has been specifically designed to control Algoriddim DJay software, and looks very similar to Vestax's VCI-100 controller for Traktor. But unlike the VCI-100, the Spin controller has a built-in soundcard so you can plug in headphones and hook it straight into a soundsystem.

Slick and simply laid out, the Spin controller replicates a basic deck/mixer set-up. Two jog-wheels, volume controls and a crossfader make up the main face of the unit, with the usual stop/start/cue button array just under the jog-wheels. The top section contains all the EQ, track load, tempo and auto loop buttons.

The included DJay software - which can also be bought separately for about £30 - integrates with your iTunes library, allowing tracks to be dragged and dropped onto the virtual decks with ease - no need to organise new playlists and the likes.

DJay shifts away from the usual Traktor style audio waveform format and gives a turntable view, as if the tracks are actually playing on two decks, which makes for a simple and fun experience for beginners.

Combining the software and the controller, DJ style tricks are quite easy to perform. Auto scratching will fool your friends that you have scratch skills and the auto beat mixing facility works sufficient well enough to match the BPM of tracks and take the hard work out of mixing. Spin's touch-sensor platters make it easy to cue up and control tracks and the jog-wheels will even allow for scratching.

Coming in at $400, this little package gives a quick introduction to the art of the DJ.

PRICE: $400

DJ HERO WORSHIP

djheroworship.jpg

The much-rumored addition to the Guitar Hero family of games was recently confirmed by the game developers at Activision, who announced that DJ HERO will be hitting store shelves this fall.

With an all-new innovative turntable controller, DJ Hero transforms players into DJs who rule the club scene by creating original mixes of popular songs and music from the world's most exciting artists and DJs.

DJ Hero expands Guitar Hero's signature social gaming. By launching DJ Hero, Activision hopes to appeal to a whole new legion of gamers by adding new (read: non-rock) music genres including hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance.

The company continues to be very tight-lipped on the artists and DJs that are involved with the project. But seeing the roster of rock gods (Metallica, Aerosmith) they've featured in previous releases, the lineup will likely be major!

Deadmau5 Unveils An iPhone Application!

touchmix1.jpg

If you’re a proud iPhone owner we know it’s highly likely you’re always on the lookout for the latest hot applications to impress your friends, not to mention people who stare at you using the phone while on public transport. If you’re also a fan of Canadian dance star Deadmau5, you can now combine your two loves in one spiffy iPhone application.

Touching down for the Good Vibrations Festival tour this month, Deadmau5’s visit is timed perfectly with the launch of the new application Touch Mix, which he’s put his name/face/music/mau5head to. The application is described as ‘revolutionary’, with Beatportal even going so far as to say “Touch Mix could also be a forerunner to how DJing software on the platform should work.”

The program features two ‘virtual decks’, as well as a crossfader and volume controls, sound effects – like filter, flange, loop and delay – and adjustable BPM. There’s catch however; the application appeal is going to depending on what side of the love/hate Deadmau5 fence you stand… At this stage you can only mix his music with the download coming pre-loaded with 10 of his tracks.

AX Recommends: Sony Muteki Xrossfade System

muteki.jpg
Sony took a page from the DJ books to bring us the LBT-DJ2i Muteki XROSSFADE. This massive music monolith brings a trembling 450 total watts of power, a CD player, AM / FM tuners, a line-in jack, a set of 2-way shelf speakers, twin (yes, twin) 7-inch enclosed subwoofers and the ability to convert CDs / radio to MP3 files.

There’s more: DJ dreamers will also find a bundled cross-fader with monitor cue and a built-in two-channel mixer. Sony takes it home with the iPod interface, so the track readout is visible on the system, not just on the players themselves. Need to blend and missing the beat? Utilize the Beat Blend function for pre-programmed percussion/drum loops. And for those that want to play back their brilliant mix at future listening sessions, included is a USB recording function to allow that at-home ultimix to be saved to a USB device in MP3 format.

While the price of such a system may not be pitch perfect for some, the brilliance of the package may sway the budding DJ enthusiast in us all.

Take a look at the XROSSFADE here.
Happy Mixing.

A|X RECOMMENDS: COLORSPLASH X-PRO SPECIAL

colorsplash-xpro-special.jpg
A design collaboration between Printemps Design au Centre Pompidou and The Lomographic Society yielded a traditional film camera of incredible form and specialized function. Encased in rubberized black and stamped with an “X,” the X-pro Colorsplash Special is optimized for excellent cross-processing.

The best thing about cross-processing is the element of surprise and the X-pro Colorsplash Special remixes your photos with it’s long exposure capability, creating dreamy streaked backgrounds behind crisp, color-flashed foregrounds.

Prepare to be dynamically surprised with intense washes of cyan, cream, and magenta. The entire color balance and contrast level of your images is remixed using either of the two different processes for processing common consumer film. Normal color negative film is processed via C41 chemicals. Slide flim is finished through E6 chemicals. These respective chemical treatments interact with your film to bring out the correct image for your film composition. Alternately, you can also cross ordinary color negative film with E6 chemicals, yielding softer and grainier results.

The X-pro Colorsplash Special turns your personal pix into art-house photos using the cross-processing effects. Different film brands and emulsions will yield different shifts in color, alternate levels of contrast, and play with the proportions of film noir.

Package includes the camera (naturally), battery, film, poster guide, color filters, and silver custom case.

The X-pro Colorsplash Special is limited to 500 units and only available here

Tenori-On means in Japanese is "sound in your palm" and that is what you get with this cutting-edge musical instrument from Yamaha. This unique 16x16 LED matrix MIDI controller can be loaded with samples and is a visually stunning piece of equipment.

Released last month at a number of UK record shops, Yamaha is hoping to capture the imagination of DJs and producers, as well as those inexperienced in making music.

Yamaha states: “One remarkable effect of this sound and light synergy is that people seem to quickly understand the relationship between the sounds and switches such that even non musicians can enjoy improvising and even composing almost immediately.”

Tenori-On is being deck-tested by a number of high-profile electronic music artists including Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Matthew Herbert, Mouse On Mars and Cornelius.

Cool Gadget-Printer On The Go

zinc.jpg

Now you can print photos from your phone with this cool inkless compact printer that uses plastic paper with thermal properties. These thermal properties react to different temperatures and deliver great quality.

The printer is compact and can attach to any handheld device. To create the perfect colors, the printer uses a method that controls the colors by using temperature. The crystals in the top yellow layer need the highest temperature and shortest time to melt, the magenta (which is the middle layer) needs a lower temperature and longer time, the bottom cyan layer requires the lowest temperatures and longest exposure time.

The printed images look great and are water proof. This gadget is expected to be available late 2007 for about $200. For more info check out: www.zink.com/experience/products/z-printer/
